We have avoided fragrance in our home for quite sometime but the truth is it is lurking everywhere you go and in everything! The EWG rates fragrance at an 8; an overall high health hazard. This is a major problem and in far more products than you would think, it’s not just the beauty products that are of concern. I recently read an article about fragrance that a friend had shared online. It stated some eye-opening points on how fragrance was the new secondhand smoke. I can completely relate to that and my respiratory system and skin pay for it. For someone with allergies, asthma or sensitive skin being exposed to these chemical irritants causes a series of trouble. Not to mention possible hormonal disruptions or neurological concerns. Companies are not required to disclose their “trade secrets” and “fragrance” is virtually 100’s, maybe even 1,000’s, of unknown chemicals that are protected by the federal law. Scary. Just scary. I am also now learning that even products that are labeled to be unscented, or free and clear, often contain harmful, chemical masking agents. Seriously… why?!
I have such a problem with fragrance that even when I go to someones’ house that uses heavily-scented hand soap in their bathrooms I will find myself coming home with raw, cracked hands. I also recently have spent time visiting friends and family and found myself in a head to toe rash from sleeping in sheets and using bath towels that were washed in scented laundry detergent. It’s obvious I am allergic to some particular chemicals that are in those products but even a dermatologist or allergist can’t seem to tell me. Thanks to the undisclosed, engineered concoction of chemicals that make up “fragrance”, our health is compromised. Isn’t it just mind boggling that the health of humans is less important than protecting chemical “recipes?”
Years ago, we started using more natural cleaning products and making our own recipes and hadn’t had much luck. We were still suffering from allergies and skin sensitivities. We were using a popular “all natural” cleaning concentrate at the time, it gave me headaches, I was sneezy and stuffy and even our poor puppy dog couldn’t catch a break, her poor little paws were always so itchy. It wasn’t until we switched to using Thieves Household Cleaner that I could see and feel the difference in our home. This concentrate is amazing and has replaced every. single. toxic. cleaner in our home. This cleaning product is by far the most amazing cleaner I have ever used, EVER! It smells amazing and the sweet, spicy aroma is so clean and inviting. I have used it very diluted in a DIY glass and mirror recipe to full strength outside scrubbing our inflatable pool with baking soda. Not a sign of skin irritation and the results far exceeded my expectations. Our air quality improved drastically and we could breathe a whole lot easier. It is so important to know that essential oils are NOT created equally and even those that are labeled pure and natural are often in fact diluted, adulterated, fragrance-grade oils.
So please, read the labels and educate yourselves and for the love of all things great please remove these harmful chemicals from your homes.
We have been using a free and clear product (unaware of the possible chemical dangers there as well!) but I am so excited to use this product instead. Transform your home with essential oils, get your wholesale membership and start living a more nontoxic lifestyle. You will get to try the laundry soap for free, yay! Check out the DIY recipes for fabric softener in the graphic below. Dryer sheets are just terrible products. When you use these heavily-perfumed sheets to dry your clothes, you carry these fragrance chemicals with you on your clothes, against your skin, all day long. Every thing we put on our skin is absorbed into our bodies. Vinegar is cheap and wonderful to use as an alternative to dryer sheets. Try both recipes and see which works best for you! Wool dryer balls are a great option too with a few drops of therapeutic-grade essential oils.
